Best Micro Winery ~ Red

Muscardini Cellars has just won the first ever “Best Micro Winery – Red” for the 2009 California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition.  A micro winery is considered to have a case production of less than 2500 per year.

Michael Muscardini is both honored and thrilled about this award.  The wine that put him over the top was his 2007 Sangiovese from the Pauli Ranch in the Ukiah Valley of Mendocino County.  This wine received a near perfect score of 98 points out of 100.

The Pauli Ranch vineyard is up in Ukiah and was originally planted by the Mondavi Winery.  Bill Pauli purchased the 200 acre ranch in 2000.   What is unique about the vineyard is the soil which is an ancient river bed that allows for excellent drainage.  In addition, the fruit off the vineyard is super sweet due to its long growing season.

Here are the tasting notes for the award-winning 2007 Sangiovese:

Aromas of blackberries, dark chocolate, vanilla and a hint of forest floor.
Savor the bright raspberry and cherry fruit with an elegant finish.
A great food wine.  Only 396 cases produced.

In celebration of this coveted award, Michael Muscardini is now offering a local special; just stop on by our tasting room and mention this award  There’s a good chance that you'll meet Michael and his friendly golden retriever, Beni.
