Our Palate to Palette series continues to inspire unique connections between wine and art while supporting the work of local artists. On display June 5th through August of this year, you can visit the Muscardini Cellars tasting room to view our featured Summer artist’s work on display and his Non Sequitur Tableaux exhibition.
In these oil-on-canvas mixed-media works, the landscape is treated as a stage (or tableaux) for an evolving narrative. Gehrig’s work may feel surreal, however it’s not fantastical or hallucinatory. The compositions begin to reveal the oddness of reality itself. These “happenings” could take place.
The Non Sequitur is a Latin phrase that translates to “it doesn’t follow”. It could be said to be illogical, which leads to odd juxtapositions. Before it was used in film and video, the freeze frame, commonly known as the tableau (or tableaux), originated as a technique in live stage performance where actors freeze to enhance a scene or show an important moment.
After graduating from the California College of the Arts Gehrig studied painting with Arthur Okamura and Robert Bechtle; poetry and literature with Michael McClure and conceptual approaches with Wayne E. Campbell. He went on to receive his M.F.A. (1973) in Intermedia from Mills College, where he worked closely with electronic music composer Robert Ashley. It was this experience that opened the door to experimentation with collage, surreal imagery, theater and performance art. During the 1970s, Gehrig was immersed in the conceptual art movement in the San Francisco Bay Area and created many installation and performance pieces. In the early 1980s, he decided to work primarily on canvas, combining painting with mixed media elements.
Gehrig currently teaches Design Foundations at UC Berkeley Extension and has taught drawing and design for 20 years at various institutions. He lives and works in San Anselmo, California.
You can view more of Tom Gehrig’s work along with information regarding availability of mixed media works and giclee prints here.
On Sunday, June 7th, from 2-4PM, we invite you to join us for artful conversation with featured local artist Tom Gehrig. Light charcuterie will be provided and Muscardini Cellars wine will be available for purchase.
